Sum Total is a design fiction project that builds a world defined by the tangible collapse of the ecosystem and the intangible collapse of individuality. It imagines a world where the need for filtration masks is both functional and social. The dual mechanism of these masks, inspired by the fundamental laws of thermodynamics, quantify an individual's impact on the environment and subtlely replaces their identity with a visual reference to their consumption. The project uses energy balance equations to create new metrics that could quantify personal consumption and designs with the material qualities of printed hydrogel filters to examine how such a link between consumption and identity would impact society.
